THE LOVE OF OUR EARTHLY FATHER AND OUR HEAVENLY FATHER!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, 
how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to 
them that ask him?" Matthew 7:11

A young man was getting ready to
 graduate from college.  For many months he had admired a beautiful 
sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well 
afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.  As graduation day 
approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased 
the car.  Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called 
him into his private study.  His father told him how proud he was to 
have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him.  He handed his
 son a beautifully wrapped gift box.  Curious, and somewhat 
disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, 
leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold.  Angry,
 he raised his voice to his father and said "With all your money you 
give me a Bible?" and stormed out of the house.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business.  He had a beautiful 
home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and 
thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that 
graduation day.  Before he could make arrangements, he received a 
telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his 
possessions to his son.  He needed to come home immediately and take 
care of things. When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness 
and regret filled his heart.  He began to search through his father's 
important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it 
years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. 
 His father had carefully underlined a verse, Matthew 7:11, "If ye then,
 being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much 
more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that 
ask him?"  As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of 
the Bible.  It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had
 the sports car he had desired.  On the tag was the date of his 
graduation, and the words "PAID IN FULL".

Dear Friend, how many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?

figure and diplomat, kept a diary.

One day he entered: "Went fishing with my son

 today--a day wasted."

His son, Brook Adams, also kept a diary, which is 

still in existence.

On that same day, Brook Adams made this entry: 

"Went fishing with my father--the most wonderful day of my life!"

The father thought he was wasting his time while fishing 

with his son, but his son saw it as an investment of time.

The only way to tell the difference between wasting 

and investing is to know

one's ultimate purpose in life and to judge accordingly.

Our Heavenly Father

Four years ago I requested that a representative from a heating company be 
sent to my house to give me an estimate for a new furnace.  
Unexpectedly, the salesmen they sent happened to be a member of a church
 which I attended seventeen years ago.   As we talked together and 
discussed a few spiritual matters, I was surprise when he told me, " My 
wife and I never forgot one special Wednesday night in the prayer 
meeting.  When you prayed from the church pulpit, we felt that you were 
talking to God. That was a really sincere prayer..."

Dear 
Christian Friend, God is our Heavenly father and we must be sincere when
 we talk to Him through our prayers. If we love and honor our own 
earthly father we have to love, honor, respect and reverence our 
Heavenly Father much more. If we pray and do not feel our spirit 
connected with the heavens, it is not a prayer, but just talk with 
ourselves. For this reason, many times we wonder why the Lord does not 
answer our prayers when we do not have the power to reach even the

A Father

Fathers are wonderful people

Why There is No Substitute for Parents"

In 1960, the total number of children living in fatherless families was 
fewer than eight million.  Today, that total has risen to nearly 
twenty-four million.  Nearly four out of ten children in America are 
being raised in homes without their fathers and soon it may be six out 
of ten.  How did this happen?  Why are so many of our nation's children 
growing up without a full-time father?  It is because our culture has 
accepted the idea that fathers are superfluous-in other words, they are 
not necessary in the "modern" family.  Supposedly, their contributions 
to the well-being of children can easily be performed by the state, 
which disburses welfare checks, subsidizes midnight basketball leagues, 
and establishes child-care facilities.

Ideas, of course, have consequences.  And the consequences of this idea 

have been as profound  as they have been disastrous.  Almost 75 percent of 

American children living in fatherless households will experience poverty 

before the age 
of eleven, compared to only 20 percent of those raised by two parents.  
Children living in homes where fathers are absent are far more likely to
 be expelled from or drop out of school, develop emotional or behavioral
 problems, commit suicide, and fall victim to child abuse or neglect.  
The males are also far more likely to become violent criminals. As 
matter of act, men who grew up without dads currently represent 70 
percent of the prison population serving long-term sentences.

Effective Fathers are:

Committed to their children.

Are consistent in their attitudes and behavior.

Practical Ways for Men to Impact Fatherless Kids:

1. Be a mentor to a boy without a father through Big Brother or some other agency

2. Contact your local junior or senior high school to tutor a needy kid

3. Teach Sunday School

4. Become a leader in Awana, Pioneer Clubs, or Adventure Club

5. Meet one-on-one weekly, with a boy in your church or neighborhood who doesn't 

have a father in the home

6. Become a leader in Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts

7. Coach Little League or some other sport

8. Volunteer to work with needy kids in an inner city ministry

9. Hire a potentially "at risk" kid for yard work or in your business

10. Become active youth leaders in your local church or a parachurch 

organization

11. Start a church-based sports league that reaches out to needy 

kids in the community

12. Lead a Bible study in a juvenile detention center or group home

Most Frightened Man in America

Thomas J. Watson, Sr., died six weeks after naming his son as the new head of 
IBM, the company the elder Watson had led for more than forty years.  
The junior Watson said his promotion made him "the most frightened man 
in America." But he took the helm and led IBM into the computer era and 
ten-fold corporate growth. His success was made possible, he said later,
 by his dad's confidence in and acceptance of him during his college 
years, when he was more interested in flying airplanes than in studying 
or applying himself.

A cover article  of U. S. News & World Report concluded that: "Dad is destiny.  More 
than any other factor, a father's presence in the family will determine a
 child's success and happiness."  The article noted that nearly two out 
of every five children in America do not live with their fathers.

Parent's Impact on Religious Beliefs

"Research has established that parents can have a significant impact on the 
religious beliefs and practices of their children.  In one recent study 
it was found that fathers who frequently attend church (over three times
 per month), discuss religion at home, and are committed to their 
religion, have sons who follow the same pattern concerning religious 
values and behavior. Interestingly, fathers who did not do these three 
things had an inconsistent pattern of influence over their son's

The Role of a Father

A father's role is seen at its highest level in God the Father and His 
only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Their eternal relationship of 
Being was one of love that is lavished upon all of God's spiritual 
children, born of Him through the work of the Holy Spirit and belief of 
the Truth. "Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon 
us," writes the apostle in 1 John 3:1 concerning the Father's love for 
His children. In His prayer to the Father, the Lord Jesus says, "Thou 
hast sent Me and hast love them, as Thou hast loved Me" (John 17:23). 
Surely, there can be no greater love!

This love of the Father is 
seen in action towards His children in its intrinsic concern and tender 
compassion. As the Psalmist writes, "Like as a father pitieth His 
children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him" (Psalm 103:13). Hence,
 a father's role is based upon and motivated by divine love. What an 
example for all earthly fathers!

Love must act for the well-being
 of its object. Every act of God the Father toward His children is for 
their good. The discipline so necessary is ministered in love, because 
"whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth [or disciplines]" (Hebrews 12:6). 
This may take the form of correction, instruction or prevention, but in 
any case it is with the end in view that His children should be 
responsive and produce "the peaceable fruit of righteousness" (Hebrews 
12:11).

The apostle Paul wrote as a father to the Thessalonians. 
They were his children in the faith. The gospel He brought to them 
caused them to turn "to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
 and to wait for His Son from heaven (1 Thess. 1:9,10). In chapter 2, 
verses 11 and 12, he writes, "As ye know how we exhorted and comforted 
and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, that ye 
would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto His kingdom and 
glory."

He exhorted them. The word implies encouragement. It 
suggests the urging on of one in a race to continue stedfastly, keeping 
the goal in view. Nothing so helps one who is flagging in spirit as a 
word of encouragement. What better encouragement can be given than God's
 Word in Hebrews 12:2? Keep "Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher 
of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross,
 despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of
 God." Children need this from their fathers.

He comforted them. 
Times of trial with disappointment and sorrow come in various forms and 
degrees. How imperative it is to be able to feel the need of children, 
enter into it and bring forth tender, soothing consolation. How needful 
that fathers are available to listen to hurting children and bring the 
comfort so needed (2 Corinthians 1:4).

He charged them. In other 
words, he set down the rules and principles of the Word of God to be 
followed. There must be no compromise with truth, that they might "walk 
worthy of God," who had called them "unto His kingdom and glory."

Abraham is a role model father. In Genesis 18:19 God says of him: "I know him, 
that he will command his children and his household after him, and they 
shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the 
Lord may bring upon Abraham that which He hath spoken of him."

Eli, on the other hand, is an example of a father not to be followed. In 1 
Samuel 3:13 his failure is revealed in not commanding his sons who "made
 themselves vile, and he restrained them not." Alas, Eli's life and that
 of his sons ended in tragic deaths brought to pass through God's 
judgment (1 Samuel 4:11,18).

A New Testament injunction to 
fathers needs fresh consideration and obedience: "Fathers, provoke not 
your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition 
of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).

What blessings would come to 
children, to households and to the assemblies of God's people if the

Like Father, Like Son

I am the father of a fine boy, seven years old. As things went I figured I
 was pretty good, since I provided for the family as best I could. But 
then all of a sudden, I found out what an awful mistake I had been 
making all these years, and what a failure as a father I had been. I 
work on the four to midnight shift in a large factory. I have been 
working there on that shift for the last nine years. Every afternoon at 
about quarter after three, I leave the house, walk the long hill down to
 the corner, and then slip into the East End Grill for a quick drink. 
Just one, you understand, or maybe two, once in a while. Never any more.
 Sort of "sets me up" for the job in a way.

Well, it started the same way that particular afternoon. It had been 

snowing the day before, and when I opened the door, it lay there, crisp,

heavy and white. The sound of my boots biting through it sounded like 

firecrackers. About halfway down the hill I heard my son call to me. 

He had just gotten home
 from school. Turning around I saw him there in the snow, trying to put 
his feet into the tracks I made. It looked so funny I started to laugh. 
He waved his hands and yelled, "Watch me, dad! I'm following right in 
your tracks!"

I don't know just what it was but those words hit 
me like a whip. All at once I saw a picture of myself sneaking around 
for that "set me up," and I felt sick and ashamed deep inside. You see, 
my boy knew nothing about that. And now, he never would--never! Right 
then and there I said to myself, "No, my boy, no! You're not going to 
follow me into the East End Grill at all." And from that moment I 
haven't touched the stuff.

I told some of the boys about it at 
supper-time as we sat at work by the tool-crib. I felt kind of proud of 
myself, too! And I could see they looked up to me for it.

It was just about time to get back on the job, when one of them reached over. 
He was a quiet sort of chap, serious looking. He said something to me 
that I'll never forget. Set me to thinking real hard. Let me give it to 
you just as he said it.

He said, "You were wrong, friend. Very 
wrong. You have only given that boy of yours half an example of what a 
father should be. You have shown him what not to do, but that will never
 be enough. You have to show him what to do--the right thing to do. That
 comes when you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and 
become a new person. Becoming a born again Christian is the most 
important thing for this world and for the next. Give that son of yours 
the sight of a real Christian father and example!"

All at once I 
saw it like a flash. Now I know it came from the Lord, whom I have 
trusted as my personal Saviour. The Bible says, "Neither is there 
salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given 
among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Now, I am a complete 
father.

Why don't you consider Christ? "Believe on the Lord Jesus
 Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house" (Acts 16:31). Then you 
will be able to heed the admonition to fathers, "Provoke not your 
children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of 
the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). --John R. Anderson

Foundation for Fatherhood

Every third Sunday of June in the United States is set aside for honoring 
fathers. The idea was originated in 1909 by Mrs. John Bruce Dodd and 
officially approved by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. In 1924 
President Calvin Coolidge recommended national observance of the 
occasion "to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their
 children, and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their 
obligations."

How does a father know the full measure of his 
obligations and decide on the right things to do in raising his family? 
The best guidebook to follow for child rearing, written by a true 
Expert, is the Bible. It gives many examples and instructions for 
parents, such as "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he 
is old, he will not depart from it" (Prov. 22:6). How important it is 
that parents guide their children in ways that please God, our heavenly 
Father.

In order to do this, the father (or parents) must himself
 be a child of God through personal faith in Christ Jesus. "As many as 
received Him [Jesus Christ], to them gave He power to become the 
children of God, even to them that believe on His name" (John 1:12). 
Unless one is born again (John 3:3,5,7), thus possessing the divine 
nature (2 Peter 1:4) and being indwelt by the Spirit of God (1 Cor. 
3:16), he will be powerless to either live as an example to his children
 or to know God's will and wisdom to guide them aright.

At times 
this guidance will require that parents "chasten [their] son while there
 is hope" (Prov. 19:18). Discipline is an important aspect of emotional 
well-being in a child. It should center around proper training and 
teaching. Good discipline provides a child with the security of knowing 
what is expected of him.

Eli was an example of a father who 
failed to discipline his sons (1 Sam. 2:12-36). Because he would not 
restrain his sons' rebellious behavior (1 Sam. 3:13), chastisement fell 
upon Eli and his sons. Had Eli raised his boys with firm discipline, 
they may have initially interpreted his actions as a lack of love, but 
perhaps they would not have rejected God and been subjected to the 
judgment that ended their lives.

For discipline to be proper, it must
 be administered in love. When a father uses discipline in an effort to 
restrict or encourage certain behavior, he should make sure the child 
knows that the training is being administered because of love. "Fathers,
 provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged" (Col. 
3:21). Good training not only will encourage children in their proper 
areas of interest but also will restrict them from activities that are 
not proper. Positive words of appreciation should be at least as 
frequent as words of disapproval.

Proper training will include 
spiritual teaching that encourages the child to open his soul to the 
ministry of the Holy Spirit in his life. Spiritual training should take 
place, on the one hand, by a father as he teaches orally. On the other 
hand, oral instruction to children in biblical truths must be reinforced
 by the example set by parents as they practice the truths they teach.

King David saw the results of being a poor example to his sons. David was a 
valiant warrior with a strong faith in God, but he willingly indulged 
his personal desires. His example of lust influenced his sons who 
suffered from the consequences of walking in his steps. The child died 
that was born as a result of David's sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam. 12:18). 
David had other sons by various wives, and they followed his immoral 
example. Amnon, who ravished Tamar (2 Sam. 13:1-19), was murdered by 
Absalom's servants (2 Sam. 13:22-29). Later, Absalom plotted to seize 
David's throne (2 Sam. 15:7-14). Though David loved God and wrote many 
psalms of worship and praise, his sons tended to follow his actions 
rather than his words. A father's words must be faithfully lived out 
before his children.

When a child sees that God is real and 
important in his father's life, that child will be inclined to make God 
important in his own life too. A child who sees that his father takes an
 active interest in serving Christ and studying His Word will be more 
inclined to develop those interests himself. It is especially important 
that children see those qualities in fathers. Too often our culture 
assumes that religious activity means more to women than to men. When 
our children see that the things of God are important to their fathers, 
they will be more encouraged to pursue spiritual matters.

Abraham "pitched his tent ... and ...builded an altar" (Gen. 12:8). The first 
thing his family saw when they stepped out of their tent was the altar. 
We do our children a great disservice if we send them out each day to 
face the world without first reading God's Word with them and letting 
them hear us commend them to God in earnest prayer.

Isaac was too young to remember when his father, Abraham, circumcised him (Gen. 
21:4); but he grew up aware that his father had obeyed God in the 
matter. When God instructed Abraham to offer Isaac, there is no 
indication that Isaac resisted (Gen. 22:1-19). The Bible does not 
directly state Isaac's age at the time, but refers to him as a "lad" 
(Gen. 22:12). Isaac was strong enough to carry the wood that was to be 
used for the sacrifice. He certainly would have been able to resist when
 his elderly father bound him and laid him on the altar. Isaac had 
developed a strong, obedient, and submissive faith in the Lord. He 
followed the example of his father! And later, he, too, built an altar 
outside his tent (Gen. 26:25).

Our love for our children should  be expressed by a deep committment that makes 

us willing to sacrifice 
personal desires to provide for them. However, we must never put our 
love for our children above our love for the Lord. We need to care for 
the physical needs of our children, while still giving adequate time for
 their emotional and spiritual needs.

Such intricate and difficult balances would be impossible to achieve by 

our own wisdom and 
strength. Happily, God can help fathers establish and keep balanced 
family goals. He has said that he "will instruct thee and teach thee in 
the way which thou shalt go" (Psalm 32:8). The challenge of parenthood 
would be overwhelming if we had to plan our own methods! God has 
reassured us that we do not need to depend on our own understanding 
(Prov. 3:5,6). A father can seek wisdom from God who "giveth to all men 
liberally" (James 1:5).

Some fathers find it difficult to admit 
that they do not have all the answers or wisdom. However, the truly wise
 man realizes that by using the Bible and its divine principles as a 
foundation, he can build a family structure that is sound, secure and 
successful (Joshua 1:7,8). To NOT depend on God is, in fact, the most 
dangerous thing a father can do.--Adapted

Don't forget Father's Day June 21!

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the
 LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you
 to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so 
he giveth his beloved sleep. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD 
and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a 
mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his
 quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak 
with the enemies in the gate. Psalm 127

Psalm 127 implies that when 
dads learn to shoot straight, the kids are going to hit the mark. You 
see, an arrow is no more effective than the warrior who shoots it. And 
the bow is not much better than the man that holds it in his hand.

1. THE ARCHER MUST BE STRONG

When
 I was in college, I was introduced to the sport of archery. I learned 
that no matter how fine the arrow, and how strong the bow, it takes an 
incredible amount of skill. There must be

a good aim

a full draw, and

a smooth release

to make that arrow go where you want it to go. It takes skill, practice, 

and determination.

If an arrow missed its target, it may have been that the arrow was of 
inferior quality, there were moving targets, or there was an unforeseen 
wind that blew the arrow away from the target.

But despite all of
 these interferences, the warrior still has the responsibility to hit 
his target. Circumstances like these should only increase his efforts.

The same is true of fatherhood, so my responsibility as a father is to 
shape, sharpen, and shoot those arrows at the enemy. Do you know what my
 goal in life is? To be a good preacher? I hope I can be a good 
preacher. But my highest ambition, is to be a good husband and father. I
 believe that if a man doesn't practice his Christianity at home, he 
ought not to be telling others about it.

The father must be working his spiritual muscles to do the work 

to which God has 

called him. They need to be

reading, studying, and meditating upon the Word,

spending time alone with God every day to

develop their relationship with Him, and

get their marching orders.

praying for their faith and family to grow spiritually.

2. THE ARROWS MUST BE STRAIGHT

You cannot shoot straight with crooked arrows. And so, your job as 

a dad is to sharpen 

those arrows to shoot at the enemy.

Now,
 how do you shape and sharpen arrows? Read Ephesians 6:4. The word 
"nurture" literally means the discipline and teaching of the Lord. You 
are to sharpen by teaching and training.

Begin Early. When you 
have a young twig that is soft and pliable it is easier to shape it. 
That's the reason Proverbs 22:6 tells us to train a child.

Be Creative. Read Deuteronomy 6:6-7. There are countless occasions during 
the life of your child to sharpen them. Just be available!

Work to Build Character. Teach contentment, courage, courtesy, discernment, 
fairness, generosity, gentleness, helpfulness, honesty, humility, 
kindness, obedience, orderliness, patience, persistence, self-control, 
tactfulness, thankfulness, thriftiness, wisdom, and zeal.

Learn to Set Some Limits on Your Child. When you set limits, remember to have 
some great principles. And most importantly, adhere to them, because 
that child will push against them.

Assign Responsibilities. Give them regular work assignments. Teach them that 

there's a link between success and work. And make them complete the job - don't fix it for 
them. Teach responsibility.

Let Your Home Be Filled With 
Laughter. Your home ought to be the happiest place in town. If your home
 is happy, it has a much greater chance of survival.

Let Your 
Kids See God At Work In Your Family. Your home is a laboratory. Let your
 children see that God is a vibrant reality in your life.

Cover Them 
Constantly With Prayer. A father without prayer is like an archer with 
an unstrung bow. No matter how dark it gets or how discouraging it may 
become, never stop praying.

3. THE AIM MUST BE SURE

Fathers
 need a goal to take their family back from the devices of this world 
and devote them to God. How are we ever going to shoot down the 
humanistic ideas of a post-modern generation?

Psalm 127:5 has a 
clue, "but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate." Our arrows 
will speak with the enemies. They will say, "That's a lie. Here's the 
Truth that my father taught me from the Word of God."

Many times 
we try to keep our children from the enemy. But friend, we ought to aim 
our children at the enemy. They are our arsenal.

Joyce and I did not 
raise four children just so they could live in safety and harmony. We 
raised them them to be arrows to go out against the enemy. The apostle 
John said, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in 
truth" (3 John 4).

I have goals for myself; but I have desires for my children. I desire godly 

children; so my goal is to be a godly dad.

A song by Phillips, Craig & Dean called I Want To Be Just Like You 
has a lot of applicability to this message on fatherhood. It is sung 
from a father's point of view, and the chorus is a prayer to God:

Lord, I want to be just like You

'Cause he wants to be just like me.

I want to be a holy example

For his innocent eyes to see.

Help me be a living Bible, Lord

That my little boy can read.

I want to be just like You

'Cause he wants to be like me.

Fathers need to have an aim (or desire) before they release those arrows. It is
 our job, as parents, to work ourselves out of a job. Arrows are to be 
straight, sharpened, and sent. There comes a time when they are in your 
hand, then they are out of your hand.

In conclusion, if you are a father, let me ask you these things:

a. Would you ask God to make you a mighty man?

b. Would you get to work shaping, sharpening, and seasonings your arrows?

c. Would you work on your skills at being an archer?

d. Would you rethink what your goals and desires are for your family?

e. What is your aim for your child?

f. What kind of success do you want for your children?

Now, if your children have flown and you feel it's too late, let me tell you
 that it is not too late. You can recover lost arrows. Keep praying. Ask
 God for His mercy to give you a second chance.

Some reading this
 today may have a father who is nothing like the dad I've been talking 
about. Your father may have deserted you, or abused you, or been cruel 
to you - and perhaps he still is. But I want to tell you that there is a
 Father in glory who loves you more than any earthly father ever could. 
Psalm 27:10 promises, "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the
 LORD will take me up."

God wants to be your forever Father. Have you
 trusted Christ as your Lord and Savior and made God your heavenly 
Father? If not, I beg you to do that today. Jesus can be the Love you 
have always been trying to find.

Promises for Fathers

A father's world is filled with responsibilities and concerns, but God promises 

wisdom and strength from his Word.

When you need strength.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. 

2 Corinthians 12:9

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

When you need wisdom.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without 

reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5

When there are family tensions.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in 
Christ forgave you.. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the 
church and gave himself up for her.. Fathers, do not provoke your 
children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction 
of the Lord. Ephesians 4:32; 5:25; 6:4

When you are concerned for the future.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare 
[peace] and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 
29:11

When you face difficult problems.

Let us then with 
confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy 
and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

When you face financial trouble.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ 

Jesus. Philippians 4:19

When you are worried.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and 
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
 hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

When God doesn't seem real to you.

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 

I will be found by you, declares the LORD. Jeremiah 29:13-14

When you face career choices.

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. Proverbs 16:3

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will 

be added to you. Matthew 6:33

When you are tempted.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is

Sentence Me

Perhaps the most tragic and heart-rending cry in the Old Testament is the cry 
of David when he received the news of the death of his foolish and 
traitorous son, Absalom. A careful study of the relationship of Israel's
 great king with his son reveals that Absalom's errancy could in no 
small measure be laid at David's door. The poignancy of David's cry 
carries with it the sense of his own personal responsibility: "O my son 
Absalom, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my 
son, my son!" (2 Samuel 18:33).

"Sentence me!" a modern father 
said to the judge before whom his son stood to receive the sentence for a
 crime he had committed. "I have been so busy all my life making money, 
going through the chairs in my lodge, serving on boards and committees, I
 failed to concern myself with my boy.  I alone am to blame." 
Undoubtedly, many a youth, serving a sentence in prison or reformatory, 
could point an accusing finger at his father who spent all his spare 
time on secondary matters to the neglect of his high responsibility of 
fatherhood.
